Description

Brand new demo from UK Black Metal group LYRINX!! Studio recorded and mixed, April 2007.
Nihilistic Purity is a sombre, melancholic blend of Black Metal and Doom. Mournfully melodic lead guitar; a strong bass; powerful drums and tortured, distressing vocals! A sound which naturally has similarities to the best-era of Germany’s BETHLEHEM!!

This is the first demo of a series exploring nihilism, and here particularly the psychological impact of this anti-philosophy on the human mind. A theme perfectly befitting the label ‘Todestrieb’ !

Reviews

As it seems, some British combos are fed up with their scene being populated by both abysmally bad one-man accidents and - what should still drive the scene gurus crazy - some particular groups that dare to make their music accessible for a large audience and even seriously thinking about earning money with this. For a long time, Great Britain owed us some pearls in terms of Black Metal but regarding quality, something’s slowly moving: Although Lyrinx have without doubt used the Internet, especially the hype machinery, to get things going, but this time, it isn’t a waste of time at all.
As soon as the play button is pressed, the listener gets sucked into a wide, but forsaken world that reminds of the early days of Nae’blis and a little bit of Abyssic Hate - with the difference that there is a real band behind this work in which everyone meets their obligations in a competent (drums) to at times even marvellous way. I especially want to highlight the frontman’s work, who puts in so much authenticity into this album that even seasoned hordes will get goose bumps here. How much pain is heard here can never be described rationally; only the advice to listen to a sample could be close to what I mean. The massively resounding and floating melodies, which band leader Lyr plucks out of his guitar, couldn’t possibly be more harmonic and flawless; but the definitive highlight on “Nihilistic Purity” are the endings of the third and fourth track, with the most saddening leads ever on top of them with which the whole song collapses - unparalleled! The rhythm section is conspicuous because of their audible (!) commitment; at times, the bassist comes along with some wonderfully rounding ideas that do not stand under the dictate of the guitar department. And thus, Lyrinx create hovering, “spacious” sounds in which one would love to drown and adopt as one’s own - if there wouldn’t be the short playing time as well as the opener which extensive “swimming about” in particular passages give me rather the impression of an overlong intro than an actual song.
Nevertheless, the mini-album (which has been maid available now on a larger scale) remains to be the strongest stuff that came from the UK until now. Some time ago, there was a run on the tape version, so everyone who by all means wants to get a copy in this format, should be prepared to dig a bit deeper for it than expected - or just switches to the CD version of Goatowarex that should still be available at some mail-orders (Choirs of Delusion for example). But in the end, it doesn’t matter which format is now getting purchased - at least “Nihilistic Purity” is listened to at any cost if you feed your stereo with some depressing stuff from time to time.
(8/10) Taakefrost.
