Review: Von – Satanic Blood

The ultimate in early minimalist metal, Von created ultra-simplistic satanic metal back in 1988. This demo, capably created by an American band probably as a heretical joke, is in the sub-vain of Bathory with endearingly simple guitar leads, shy percussion and guttural growls which are performed so monotonously they become another instrument. Quite ahead of it peers, Von redefined song-writing and took the grindcore sound of Carcass/Napalm Death to new demonic depths. Occasional guitar solos and rare fills are the only breaks in non-stop fluxing sound waves, and putting this demo in it’s historical place makes it very significant in the progression of black metal.
The demo reared its head most recently after being covered by Dark Funeral and was subsequently re-released, nevertheless it’s cult status remains.
