26 Years Ago: MAYHEM live in Leipzig (Photos and Audio)

We just started playing live after a break which lasted 4 years, and the reasons were lack of members and rehearsalplaces. And songs. Now we did a couple of gigs, it was cool except that all the equipment fucked up on the 1st one, and Hellhammer was drunk and ruined the gig on the 2nd one… From now on we must have total prohibition of any use of alcohol before a gig, and if some in the band drinks, I will refuse to play. Well, except for shit like that it was cool! We had a real brutal show on the 1st gig with pig heads on stakes, corpse paint in the faces and that Dead cut himself up and was bleeding on the audience. In the end everything was a big mess of blood and pig brains hehe
We are going to take the show even further later, with craniums, bones, stench of rotting meat and lots of nice stuff like that on stage. If everything goes great, we’ll tour Turkey and Greece this year. Then we’ve the LP coming, and next year a tour in USSR, which hopefully will give us those money necessary to play in South America and other places. The dream is (for me) to play in Albania, China, Mongolia, North Korea, Kampuchea and all those countries!! But the other guys don’t want to do this, they believe that we’ll never get out of those countries again…

– Euronymous / Mayhem interview, Holocaust #4 1990

The infamous concert performed on this day in 1990. Recorded at the Eiskeller club which is today known as Conne Island in the district of Connewitz, Leipzig, Germany.

Record of the Week: TORMENTOR – Anno Domini (Hideous music of the dark!)

tormentor-anno-domini_MED

The impact of hearing this for the first time cannot be overstated. Years pass, but every time you will be POSSESSED!!!! One of the absolute greatest black metal albums. Dark and mysterious and EVIL. I think it’s fair to draw a line of direct influence from BATHORY and BULLDOZER(!) to TORMENTOR to MAYHEM, EMPEROR and the Norwegian circle.

Released by the band as a demo, Anno Domini was always intended to be their debut album:

Yes, last year we fixed a stuff that named ‘Anno Domini’. It was planned to be out all over Hungary but last just remained as our second demo.
– János Zsobrák (the band’s manager who would often answer interviews and mailed demos), Pure Fucking Hell zine #2, 1994

The Anno Domini LP was originally going to be released by Euronymous’ Deathlike Silence Productions around 1991 but it never happened:

It’s very strange with D.S.P. because Euronymous wants this lp for a very long time, and nothing is happening. I know he has problems (MAYHEM lp, starting the shop in OSLO etc.) but think about this that this lp is very important to us. Now we have another label interested, but they didn’t give us a sure answer yet.
– Slayer mag #9, 1991

The band had trouble in 1990 and eventually split in 1991. It took a few more years but Anno Domini was eventually released a couple of times in 1995 by Head Not Found and Samoth’s Nocturnal Art Productions, with cover art by Supernal’s Alex K.
Most of the band have not continued with music. Attila Csihar stayed in contact with Euronymous and after Dead’s suicide (the same year TORMENTOR split) Attila joined MAYHEM as vocalist for De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas.

Beyond essential, the riffs will be burnt into your brain on first play!

24 Years Ago: MAYHEM rehearse DMDS tracks (Audio)

Recorded 16 May 1992, just over a year after Dead’s suicide, this rehearsal is bootlegged as From the Darkest Past. All instrumental.
Hellhammer – drums, Euronymous – guitar and Count Grishnackh – bass.
These songs were finally recorded in studio beginning later that year with the addition of Atilla on vocals. Eventually released as De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas in May 1994.

The situation is still very difficult. I’ve been checking out some places lately and probably we’ll manage to rent a good rehearsal place in a couple of weeks. In the future we’ll join together with Thorns and possibly Darkthrone to make a really good rehearsal place with lots of equipment, and we have been talking about trying to put up a small studio too. We shall see.

The new Mayhem LP will be entitled De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas and it will be DARK. If everything goes OK, we’ll record it VERY soon and get it out some time in the summer of ’92. We’ll try to record it by using a good studio which is quite cheap so that should be ok. It will be very massive, as we’ll have two guitars (+ solo) and two basses. It will be very fast, with lots of dark emotions and moods. I can’t really tell so much about it, anything may still happen (as usual).

Daily Noise: Apocalyptic Theatre Episode 666

Parts 2 & 3 below.

I believe a US local cable-access show from 2008. This post is related to Der Wehrwolf fanzine. The fourth issue is a collaboration with Mourning the Ancient and includes a CD with music from an indie film shot by MtA. This episode of Apocalyptic Theatre includes clips from the Mourning the Ancient video. Until the zine CD this was the only way to hear music made for the film. Includes tracks by members of THY PRIMORDIAL, BELTANE, ABIGOR (two songs), THEATRES DES VAMPIRES, and THE SOIL BLEEDS BLACK.

Apocalyptic Theatre played a collection of videos. This episode includes BELPHEGOR, MAYHEM, CHRISTIAN DEATH and BOYD RICE.
Special note for the StrataNael flyer! Promoting their London IMPIETY gig in September, 2008.

Mayhem – Deathcrush: I’ll Send You to Your Maker!

Mayhem Deathcrush

The demo you’ve been waiting for from the true masters of mayhem, featuring their new vocalist, Maniac: DEATHCRUSH. This is what you can expect to hear on the demo of the year: «Witching Hour», «Pure Fucking Armageddon», and a special intro by the master of mysticism, Conrad Schnitzler. This is THE demo of 1987 – death crushing heaviness churned into the frenzy of chainsaw velocity!

Record Store Day 2013 (Venom, Burzum, Mayhem, Megadeth, Judas Priest)

The increasingly popular (from 10 special releases in 2008 to over 400 last year) Record Store Day marks it’s sixth year this Saturday. Usually not much of interest relating to underground metal, and in general this year is no different, however some classic metal recordings are getting a limited edition vinyl release, so we have attempted to stock a few Record Store Day releases, all listed below.

Each of these are limited to 1000 worldwide, with only 250 made available to the UK.
Important to say, these are all legitimate copies, not from participating shops and resold (which happens a lot). We made sure these copies were ordered in only after physical shops took their stock.

Bolt Thrower – In Battle There is No Law (White/Black/Grey splatter vinyl)
Burzum – Burzum / Aske (White/Black/Grey splatter vinyl)
Burzum – Det Som Engang Var (50/50 White/Grey colour)
Burzum – Filosofem (Clear/White/Grey/Brown splatter vinyl)
Burzum – Hvis Lyset Tar Oss (White/Black/Grey splatter vinyl)

Motorhead – Bomber
Motorhead – Overkill

Killing Joke – Nervous Systum (CD)
Napalm Death – Leaders Not Followers
Napalm Death / Insect Warfare – Split

Overkill – Live From Oz
Poison Idea – Filthkick E.P. (killer record, only 100 of these will make it over to the UK)
Rainbow – Rising
Roky Erickson – Mine Mine Mind / Bloody Hammer (hand numbered…4000 copies)
Slayer – Hell Awaits
Slayer – Live Undead / Haunting The Chapel
Slayer – Show No Mercy
The Fall – Sir William Wray

All but a couple are limited 500-1000+

This is the one day that all of the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and hundreds of artists in the United States and in various countries across the globe make special appearances and performances. Festivities include performances, cook-outs, body painting, meet & greets with artists, parades, djs spinning records and on and on. Metallica officially kicked off Record Store Day at Rasputin Music in San Francisco on April 19, 2008 and Record Store Day is now celebrated the third Saturday every April.

I sign only the best bands in the world, in my opinion. I WILL NEVER sign a band which exists because of a trend. All the DSP bands will be something special. Most of the labels just spread around a lot of mass produced shit, but we will stand above all that. When people buy a DSP release they will know they buy a ultimate in blackness and quality, with only bands who believe 100% in what they write, I dont sign a band if I like the only, I must think they are best in the world before I sign them. – Euronymous (Kill Yourself! Magazine)

Through struggle and conflict, Deathlike Silence managed to release many of the most essential releases from early nineties Scandinavia during 1990-1994 (the year following Euronymous’ death). Remaining fiercely underground and independent, it never managed to become the home for all important Norwegian Black Metal (though there were strong possibilities Emperor and Darkthrone’s post-Soulside albums would be released by DSP), but from the black thrash of Merciless, Satanic Ritual of Abruptum, Sigh’s pinnacle to genre-defining works by Mayhem and Burzum, every DSP release is an intrinsic part of Black Metal history!
DSP releases have been reissued numerous times by various labels (though Deathcrush and De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas remain in print on the DSP label to this day), all available reissues and related items will be listed here!

  • Anti-Mosh 001: Merciless – The Awakening (1990)
